The original Niña, Pinta, and Santa Maria were used by Christopher Columbus on his first voyage across the Atlantic as common trading vessels. In 1986, the Columbus Foundation was formed in the British Virgin Islands to raise money to build three ships that Christopher Columbus used in his encounter with the New World. Due to funds and time constraints only one ship was built at the time. However, on February 25, 2005 a second fleet was launched, the Pinta.
Today, both the Nina and Pinta replica's are a 'sailing museum' that has visited over 300 ports in the US. The Columbus Foundation receives no funds from government agencies or private foundations. Help support the Columbus Foundation with fees paid to tour the Nina and Pinta.
