Water Conditions

The predicted water level is approximately 807.8 feet above sea level. The average surface temperature is in the mid 50’s with cooler surface temperatures in the early morning hours. The reservoir is stained in some areas and fairly clear in others.

Summary

The reservoir level is dropping. If you like cool weather fishing, autumn has arrived. All fishing has slowed somewhat, but some bass and crappies are still being caught. The bass are biting a little better. Minnow imitating crankbaits either trolled or casted are doing well right now. Spinnerbaits with chartreuse and white skirts and gold willow leaf blades are still catching some good bass. Crappies are being caught on flies and grubs with 1/8 ounce leadheads while trolling. The biggest crappies are being caught in the submerged timber on minnows at about 15ft. Walleyes love this weather, especially on overcast days.

Crappie

6-30 Feet Moderating The crappies are still biting and trolling for them is the best choice. Submerged structure such as brushpiles and fallen trees are holding some good crappies right now. You may have to fish as deep as 20 to 30 ft. for some crappies, but some are still biting around the 10-15 ft. level. Trolling small 1/8 ounce lead heads tipped with a minnow is catching some of the bigger crappies. As always, the number one bait of choice for crappie is the minnow. Vertical jigging a minnow on a small leadhead seems to be the best method for catching congregated crappie in the brushpiles.

Walleye

9-25 Feet Slow The walleyes are on the submerged islands and humps. They are also chasing the shad between midnight and daylight around primary points and islands. Big, white bucktail jigs tipped with a minnow are catching some nice sized walleye and chartreuse is also a good color choice. For best results, bounce the jigs on the edges of the river channel and work them in the same direction as the current. Sometimes you can find them in the flats area adjacent to the river channel. If so, pitch the jig up on the flats and work them back toward the channel.

Bass

2-12 Feet Moderating Bass are biting a little better this week. Some are still hitting spinnerbaits. Chartreuse and white skirts are a good color choice. Soft plastics are doing fair right now also. Beavers and chigger craws are catching some good smallmouth and largemouth and the best color choice for those is green pumpkin. Minnow imitating crankbaits, such as Shad Raps and Rattle Traps are catching some keeper bass. Buzzbaits, Zara spooks, and Torpedoes are good early morning topwater choices. Primary points seem to be holding the majority of the bigger bass, especially if there are some lay down trees or other submerged structure nearby. Boathouses are holding some nice bass also, while secondary points are another good place to look for bass.
